HB 177 Standard Care Arrangements (Brinkman, T [R]). Would allow a CNP, CNS, or CNM APRN to practice without a collaborating physician or podiatrist – would eliminate the standard care arrangement requirement. Also prohibits a physician from issuing a schedule II controlled substance prescription from a convenience care clinic, and allows school district/youth sports organizations to authorize any licensed health professional to assess an athlete for a concussion, and to clear the athlete to play. This is an excellent topic for discussion! There is a great deal of debate over this, especially coming from the physician groups. Physicians feel that NPs do not have enough knowledge to practice independently. The biggest issue with not allowing NPs to practice to the full extent of the educational preparation is that communities are suffering. Removing this standard agreement would allow NPs to practice and bill independently and move into areas of our state where access to healthcare is difficult, or there is a high need for general practitioners.
